Experience a Day at the Races Like Never Before
If you've ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a racetrack, here's your chance.
On Saturday, August 8, LOPE is partnering with Retama Park for a one-of-a-kind afternoon and evening where families can experience the exciting world of horse racing while discovering how retired racehorses continue making a difference long after their racing careers are over.
The afternoon begins with a FREE hands-on Learning Lab designed for K-12 students, teachers, parents, and youth groups—including 4-H, FFA, Pony Club, homeschool families, and anyone who loves horses. Then everyone is invited to stay for Family Fun Night at the races, with complimentary grandstand admission for Learning Lab participants.
During the Learning Lab (3:00–6:00 p.m.), you'll:
- Meet retired racehorses, track ponies, and outrider horses.
- Enjoy hands-on science and veterinary demonstrations.
- Learn from a Texas State veterinarian, horse trainer, and professional outrider.
- Tour the race barn area (weather and race schedule permitting).
- Ask questions and explore careers in horses, veterinary medicine, and animal science.
Then the fun continues...
Beginning at 6:00 p.m., you'll have reserved seating to enjoy the evening races during Family Fun Night at Retama Park.
One of the highlights of the evening comes during the first race at approximately 6:45 p.m., when children attending the event will have the opportunity to join LOPE in the winner's circle and help present the trophy to the winning connections of the first race—named in honor of LOPE. It's a memorable experience that most racing fans never get to enjoy!
Throughout the evening, there will also be opportunities to chat informally with trainers and jockeys while watching these incredible equine athletes compete.
