LOPE is a racehorse aftercare program near Austin where older “warhorses” with long racing careers now help teach youth about horsemanship, veterinary care, and STEM subjects.
This summer, we are hosting a small series of one-day experiences designed to connect:
- Veterinary students who would enjoy mentoring younger students and spending time with unique equine case studies
- Teens interested in equine veterinary careers
- LOPE’s retired racehorses, who have real histories and plenty to teach
What the Day May Include
Warhorse Clinical Experience
Hands-on learning with LOPE horses, such as:
- Case histories from long racing careers
- Soundness observation and basic evaluation
- Review of radiographs and veterinary records
- Discussion of common sports injuries and rehabilitation
- How to observe the horse in front of you
Equine Career Q&A
A relaxed discussion with veterinary students and guests about:
- How they chose this path
- What vet school is really like
- Advice for younger students
- Careers in equine medicine and horse industries
Small Group Environment
We keep groups small so students can ask questions, engage, and have meaningful time with the horses.
Who This Is For
Veterinary Students
Students currently in veterinary school who enjoy horses, mentoring, and hands-on learning.
High School Students / Teens
Students interested in horses, veterinary medicine, science, or animal careers.
Summer 2026 Dates

Cost & Support
There is no cost to attend these summer events.
Veterinary Students
Participating veterinary students may receive travel, lodging, and/or a small stipend, depending on travel needs and event format. Please contact LOPE for details.
Teens / Youth Students
Teens and younger students with a strong interest in equine veterinary careers may be eligible for fuel or other travel cost assistance if attending from farther away.
